Five Steps to Writing an Unforgettable ‘About Me’ Page

September 21, 2015 By Tania Haider

At one time or another you may find the need to write an ‘About Me’ page.  Whether it’s for a professional site, social media profile or a blog, you my dread the task at hand.  Take these five steps into account before publishing to ensure you have written an unforgettable ‘About Me’ page.

The ‘Why’ of an ‘About Me’ page

You need to consider, why you are writing this page?  Who will read it?  Who are you speaking to?  Depending on your account type; professional or personal, you will approach your ‘about me’ carefully.  Professional accounts require a conservative approach, whereas for a personal blog, you may find a fun, talkative and laid back approach is your best bet.  So consider your audience and what you are looking to achieve through this page.

Keep it real

The ‘About Me’ page is all about you.  You are the only focus; therefore express who you are and your professional enthusiasm.  This is the place to show it off.   Give your readers a little information about who you are and what you are all about.

Tell your story

Getting personal with your readers will help them understand you better.  Or even better, it may help them understand the motivation behind your writing.  Your story will express your individuality and if told well, will make you stand out from the crowd.

Concise is cool

Everyone likes to talk about themselves; the key is to know when to stop.  Be careful not to go overboard.  Stick to the important facts.  If you are stumped or can’t figure out whether you are being concise, then ask a friend or coworker to suggest changes and improvements.

Don’t overthink

Remember that this page introduces you to your readers.  However, it isn’t the be all and end all.  Just make sure it is accurate, befitting your style and serves its purpose.  Being relaxed will help your words flow well.

In addition to these points, it is recommended that you add a photo to make your ‘About Me’ page more personal, while still maintaining a certain level of professionalism.
