Are you writing for people and optimizing for robots

June 12, 2013 By Ayesha Sohaib

SEO has us all wrapped around its dainty little finger. We believe our content rules. And yet SEO is ruling us all.

So while content is king, SEO is definitely the most influential advisor to the royal throne.

Websites and blogs have to be optimized to rank high on search and it is no mean feat when you are competing with anyone and everyone. So how do we make SEO work?

Well, for starters, think of writing for people. Humans who feel and think and will engage with your content. If your website has a blog or it does not, your writing needs to speak directly to your reader. Which means simple writing tactics. Take the fluff out of the talk. Keep it easy. Keep it clean of clutter.

Writing for people also means you are offering insights, services, information to people, that will benefit them and help them. Information that people may be looking for. Information that is useful, entertaining and easy to find.

One great example is www.copyblogger.com which offers simple to understand, quality content. Take a look at their content strategy and you will see what writing for people really means.

Having said that, how can we ignore the know-it-all Mr. keyword. We would be lost without that particular key. So keep it safe. And while you do that, optimize your website with long tail key words. Try simpler. Think simpler. Write simpler.

Long tail keywords are better than short ones. Why? Simply because with one precise heavy key word you are subjecting yourself to more competition. Compared to ‘communication’ as a keyword, try using ‘ how communication works in business’ which may get you better results.

So writing for people and long tailed keywords. Yes, that’s right. If you can get those two to tango, you have a very strong chance with the search bots. And trust me, it is not so easy to make the bots happy. They can be temperamental.

If you really want to get google to notice you, pay attention to your title tags and meta descriptions. Even better, get it all linked up and add authorship in the mix. Now, that’s baking to a perfect golden. So a title written for people with perhaps your key word in there (hopefully- not stuffed in but integrated to read well) and a meta description that adds relevance to your website and content.

Authorships adds credibility. And boy – Google loves that. Relevance and credibility.

Think of Google as the advisor you didn’t hire. But you get to have, regardless. So make friends. After all, we are all in this together. Use Google tools — Webmaster tools, analytics, google plus badges, custom google search and the works to make google notice you.

Make google happy and you will be much happier with high traffic and higher rankings.

If you are using WordPress, try SEO plugins. They are pretty good and they keep the hassle out of your way.

Oh and one more thing, if you are a blogger or manage a blog for your business, make those posts longer, in-depth and entertaining. Google is always looking for relevance. Make your content relevant to the reader.

Of course, use social media to share, engage and inform people about what’s up with your blog or website. SEO goes hand in hand with social. Think of them as neighbors. Always interested in what the other one is up to.

One really good blog I read on managing SEO needs is All blogging Tips which covers all basics on SEO management.

Hope you find it useful. For now, I’ll leave you to think about SEO and writing for people. Also take a look at this useful infographic for your SEO needs. Do leave a comment on what kind of SEO tactics are working for your websites. Have a great day!
