How to Start your Own Blog

August 8, 2015 By Ayesha Sohaib

Starting your own blog can be exciting and intimidating at the same time.  Essentially, it is like putting yourself out there for the world to see.  Writing has a way of being truly revealing, about who you are and what you are about.  So what steps should you take when you want to start your own blog? Read on to find out.

Step One: Choose a subject

When beginning your own blog, your subject of discussion is extremely important. It needs to be something you can write about every day.  The subject matter needs to be content which will keep your readers coming back for more.  Here are some things to consider for blog topics.

  • What are you good at?
  • What do you know well?
  • What do you want to learn more about?
  • What is a popular topic right now?
  • What do you talk about the most?

Step Two: Get a website

Your blog has to live somewhere on the web. A website is where your blog will be located. There are many website providers out there – some free, some low-cost and others top-tier. If this is your first blog, it is recommended that you choose a free or low-cost option.

The two most popular website providers for blog are WordPress and Blogger. Each has its own look, feel and special features. Explore the two and pick the one that best meets your needs.

Step Three: Set up your website

To start your own blog, you need to set up your website. First things first, pick a domain name. This is what people will type in the address bar of their browsers to get to your blog. Make sure you choose a domain name that is easy to remember and easy to spell. It should also be closely related to your subject matter. “.com” domains are the most popular. Avoid hyphens in the domain name if possible. Think long and hard on this step. It will set the brand for your blog.

Then, choose a theme for the look and design of your website. You can customize the header, fonts, images, and so on.  So be creative and make your website an experience for your visitors.

Step Four: Write blog posts

After you set up your blog, it is time to begin writing. To keep readers engaged, write around two posts a week. Less than that will make your readers go elsewhere for new content. You can also post more frequently if you would like. Your blog posts should be at least 500 words and include an image. Try to include subheadings and bullet points. Breaking up text will make it easy to read.

As you continue to write blog posts, you should promote your blog to gain a larger followership. The more people that read your posts, the more influence you will have.

Have you started your own blog? We would love to hear about your experience!  And if you don’t have one yet, now that you have these little tit-bits, you are all set to begin! Best of luck!
